The prime objective of any livelihood promotion programme is to eliminate rural poverty through innovative implementation strategies involving mobilisation and organisation of the rural poor and their financial and economic inclusion. Such programmes aim at improving the livelihoods of the poor not only by way of providing access to finance and creating market linkages along the value chains for improving livelihoods but also by way of upgrading the value chains by commercialising the practiced livelihoods and creating enterprises out of it.

Event Introduction

The adoption of a value chain approach to commercialising livelihoods and making them enterprises involves addressing the major constraints and capitalising on the opportunities at multiple levels and points along a given value chain comprising of a wide range of activities such as ensuring access to cheaper or better inputs, strengthening the delivery of business and financial services, enabling the flow of information, facilitating improved market access, or increasing access to highervalue markets or value-added products.

A value chain links the stages of production of a product from the farmer to the consumer or from the producer to the consumer. It is often about improving access to markets and ensuring a more efficient product flow while ensuring that all involved in that chain benefit. With many a challenges in the agri-horti produce, when one considers promoting rural entrepreneurship in the sector, it is always desirable to come up with crop wise value-chain analysis. It is in this context that the Training of Trainers’ Programme on ‘Agri-Horti Value Chain Analysis for Promoting Rural Entrepreneurship’ is proposed for capacity building of the functionaries of the government and non-government organisations, institutions and departments who are into promoting rural entrepreneurship
