The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) was established in November 1993 as an autonomous society under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. NIOT is managed by a Governing Council and the Director is the head of the Institute. Major aim of starting NIOT under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is to develop reliable indigenous technologies to solve the various engineering problems associated with harvesting of non-living and living resources in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which is about two-thirds of the land area of India.

Minimum Monthly Remuneration
- Project Scientist – III Rs. 78,000/- + HRA (Increment of 5% for every two years of experience subject to performance review)
- Project Scientist – II Rs. 67,000/- + HRA (Increment of 5% for every two years of experience subject to performance review)
- Project Scientist – I Rs. 56,000/- + HRA (Increment of 5% for every two years of experience subject to performance review)
- Project Scientific Assistant Rs. 20,000/- + HRA (Increment of 15% for 3 years of experience with maximum ceiling of 4 such revision, i.e., up to 12 years of experience subject to performance review)
- Project Technician Rs. 17,000/- + HRA
- Project Junior Assistant Rs. 18,000/- + HRA
- Research Associate Rs. 47,000/- + HRA
